Monterey Bay Contrology is a fully-equipped classical Pilates studio offering Joseph Pilates’ traditional system of exercise located in Carmel, California.
Our mission at Monterey Bay Contrology is to provide a fully equipped, complete studio where students can practice Joseph Pilates’ system of Contrology respecting the original method as Alexandra Edwards learned from Romana Kryzanowska, Bob Leikens, and Jay Grimes. We hope to recreate the community atmosphere of the original studio where students make exercise a weekly routine and master the six principles of concentration, centering, control, breathing, flow of movement and precision.

While studying dance as an undergraduate at Sarah Lawrence College, Alexandra Daniels Edwards fell in love with the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning. After graduation she moved to New York City and studied with master teacher Romana Kryzanowska becoming a second generation certified Pilates instructor in 1996. Over the next decade, Edwards combined her Pilates training with her passion for the arts. She has worked with physical therapists to rehabilitate Broadway performers, professional dancers, musicians, and seniors. She taught dance and exercise to wheelchair bound students from New York City’s public schools with Jacques D’Amboise and the National Dance Institute. After receiving a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College in 2002, Edwards relocated to her home state of California. She owns and operates Monterey Bay Contrology, a fully equipped classical studio dedicated to offering Joseph Pilates’ traditional system of exercise. In 2018, Edwards completed Bob Liekens' LEAP program and continues to carry on his legacy as a teacher trainer with The Pilates Standard. She shares her love of Pilates with a love for dance and currently teaches in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District for ArtSmart’s Dance Around the World, a program for elementary school children started by choreographer and dancer Tandy Beal.
SEND ME A MESSAGENena Montgomery is dedicated to keeping people of all ages moving! Nena combines 16 years of Pilates study with many years of dance and teaching experience. She has an MFA in Dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and a teaching credential from Mills College. Nena received her Classical Pilates Teacher Training from Alycea Ungaro’s Real Pilates.
SEND ME A MESSAGEAmber Gilliss discovered Pilates in 2013 while studying Psychology at Monterey Peninsula College. With a background in sports and massage therapy she experienced the benefits of Pilates from her first classical Pilates mat class. Under the mentorship of Alexandra Edwards, she decided to pursue her training and become a certified Pilates teacher. In 2015, she received Power Pilates’ Classical Pilates Mat certification at Purely Pilates (now Evolve Movement Collective) in Belmont, California. She studied with Allison Gonzalez and in 2017 Amber received her comprehensive Power Pilates certification. Amber is passionate about sharing her knowledge of classical Pilates and helping individuals develop awareness, strength, and spinal flexibility. When Amber is not sharing her knowledge of Pilates, she can be found spending time with her family or leading a food tour for Carmel Food Tours on the streets of Carmel by the sea.
