A Program of The Pilates Standard

Make Your Passion Your Profession

TRAIN IN BEAUTIFUL CARMEL, CALIFORNIA

At Monterey Bay Contrology, we are ensuring the legacy of the classical Pilates method by offering education programs through The Pilates Standard, facilitated by second generation Pilates instructor Alexandra Edwards. Designed by the late Bob Liekens, the TPS program stems directly from the Romana Kryzanowska lineage. Our goal is to honor the original method of Joseph H Pilates. With fidelity to its fundamental concepts, we teach with an in-depth and intelligent approach.
About Our Program

THE CLASSICAL PILATES METHOD

Our goal is to honor the original innovation and what is now known as the “classical” method of Joseph H. Pilates. As a training facility for the internationally renowned organization, The Pilates Standard, we provide instruction to both aspiring and established teachers.

Designed by the late Bob Liekens, a second-generation Pilates instructor who was trained by and studied extensively with Joseph’s protogé, Romana Kryzanovska, we offer The Pilates Standard Comprehensive, Mat Certification and Continuing Education Workshops. Read more about Bob Liekens here.

The Pilates Standard program teaches the classical Pilates system utilizing the mat and all of the traditional apparatuses, along with an introduction to anatomy and biomechanics of the body. The Pilates Standard’s program gives students a solid foundation for their teaching careers.

Our History With Joe & Bob

ABOUT ALEXANDRA – YOUR SECOND-GENERATION INSTRUCTOR

Monterey Bay Contrology studio owner and teacher trainer, Alexandra Edwards, began her Pilates training in 1994. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 1995, Alexandra moved to New York City and attended a 12-day comprehensive training at SUNY Purchase led by three master trainers – Juanita Lopez, Roxanne Richards-Huang, and Carol Dodge Baker.
Following the comprehensive, Alexandra apprenticed with Joseph Pilates’ protege Romana Kryzanowska, spending 5 days a week at Drago’s Gym under her instruction. The mornings were spent observing, teaching, and training with Romana and in the afternoons, she learned alongside Roxanne where she developed an understanding of the special needs of older adults.
This period of apprenticeship was vital to Alexandra’s training to become a Pilates instructor. In the spring of 1996, Romana determined Alexandra was ready to teach on her own and with one of her famous toasts, deemed she was officially certified.

Soon after Alexandra began working at The Pilates Studio of New York and it was here that she met her mentor Bob Liekens. Under Bob’s mentorship, the next few years shaped and molded her as an instructor. During this time, Bob led Romana’s certification program.

In 2000, Alexandra returned to Sarah Lawrence College to complete a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Dance, honing her teaching skills as well as an in-depth anatomical study of the body. In 2002 she moved to Los Angeles and taught Pilates at The Sports Club LA and opened a private practice in Beverly Hills. During her time in Los Angeles, she was introduced to Jay Grimes and had the opportunity to do continuing education with him. She learned from Jay more about what it was like in Joseph Pilates’ original studio.

In 2012, she moved to Carmel to teach Pilates classes at Monterey Peninsula College and opened Monterey Bay Contrology in 2016. In 2018, Alexandra returned to New York to complete The Pilates Standard’s LEAP program with Bob Liekens and began the process of becoming a teacher trainer for The Pilates Standard. Shortly after Alexandra completed the LEAP Program, Bob Liekens passed away.

Along with The Pilates Standard, we are committed to carrying on his legacy and preserving the Pilates system as we all learned from Bob Liekens, Romana Kryzanowska, and Joseph Pilates.
